Hearing it constantly doesn't make it hurt any less

So I was on the 18 bus today, and as usual, I encounter a variety of unique individuals. Sometimes the people are nice and respectful, and other times they are rude, racist pigs.

You can probably already guess which I encountered today. I was listening to my cd player on level 17 volume. (the highest is 20) I was huming "You Make Me Want to Fall In Love" under my breath, when this struffy unkept man snuck on through the back of the bus. My first thought was, oh no, I hope he isn't crazy, because he had one of those crazy looks in his eyes. Lucky for me, he didn't sit next to me. Instead, he sat on one of those rows of seats that face each other. Things were fine for a few stops, then I see him constantly want to like give props to this other white male who was already busy writing in his journal. I was intrigued by his behavior, so I paid closer attention to their physical movements. Out of no where, I hear the scruffy man yell to these two young adults who were speaking some dialect of Chinese that I do not understand. Keep in mind that I was listening to music very loudly.. I still heard what he said. It was the typical racist comment that ignorant people say to people. "Speak English, you're in AMERICA." He went on and on saying that you're in America, you should speak American. He didn't even say the American language, he said speak American. He also said some things about how they could just talk about his mom in English instead of in Chinese, behind his back. He went on and on about not being chicken and speaking in English so he could hear what they were saying.

It's obvious that this man is ignorant, and a pig, but it didn't make hearing it ANY better. I walked up to the bus driver after I first heard this man yell at the two innocent passengers, asking him to do something about this man who is making me feel unsafe on the bus. The bus driver did nothing. I got uncontrollably angry at that point, and I just walked off the bus. When I got off, he said something like good, go back to China. That comment completely threw me over the edge. While walking off, I said to him that America is made up of people from many different countries. He swore at me, and pissed me off even more, so I swore back, unable to keep my composure. I was embarassed that I could not keep my cool, but I was glad that I said something about it unlike all these other people on the bus. After I got off the bus, he screamed at me to speak English. I was outraged. I yelled back at him saying I AM FUCKING SPEAKING ENGLISH YOU DUMB ASS BASTARD. He yelled back many other vulger phrases that I was too angry to listen to. I rushed to my brothers house because I was angry, and I naturally walk fast when I am angry. I was also a bit scared that he would follow me home, so I just hurried my ass.

I am tired of this happening to me. I don't know what I do to deserve this, because I never insult someone based on their ethnic background. I really felt like crying when I got off that bus. I still feel like crying. I don't understand why I want to... I know that this person is ignorant, and that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Despite all that.. I still feel really hurt by what he said. Our world is never going to be a nice place, and I hate that this is solid proof of it.

omg I feel you, just reading it made me want to cry. I'm really passionate (in the angry sense) about racism, remember? And I really admire you for talking to the busdriver, I never would have. In fact, I never would have yelled, but I would always wish that I did. I hate that I usually sit there and just watch things happen.
