Universal Health Care
Okay, so I just had a pretty heated discussion with G about Universal Health Care. Obviously, universal health care won't be really universal, but it will drastically improve the lives of many many people who would otherwise not have health care.
I am a pessimist by all means, but I do believe in this. Some form of this at least. G is totally against it and as a future doctor, he has told me time and time again that he wouldn't help someone who can't pay up. And for me, this is exactly the reason why you need universal health care. Or insurance coverage accessible to all people so that they have something to fall back on when they really need it. He operates under the assumption that people need competition to be successful and effective, so to him, the health care industry will deteriorate. There is some truth in that, but he is also admitting that doctors are evil and not benevolent and that their salaries wouldn't be enough to keep them working hard. That is too pessimistic for me. That assumption also means that people don't work in jobs that they like; people don't do things that interest them, and that's a sad sad prospect that may be true.
In ethics class, we've been discussing morally ethical situations and all this philosophical junk. It annoys me when people always refer to the uncertainty of things as a reason to reject ideas. Life is full of uncertainties and you can't operate under extreme assumptions. You have to be realistic and operate under moderate conditions. G thinks that it's a bad idea because people will just take the free ride. While that is true, it's not certain that every single person will abuse it. So does that mean you shouldn't try to implement a health care system? No. You never know until you try. And once you try, you can fine tune everything to try to decrease the abuses.
I hate when people use uncertainty as a reason for inaction. The truth is, those people are just finding excuses. I hate people who are so happy living in the status quo. We did not get to where are are today in human progress, especially in America, without challenging the status quo. I believe that our civilization has reached a certain level of success and now it's time to keep pushing to make it better.
Don't take away my optimism please.
