As I walked into school today, I saw a group of people around the flag pole praying. From afar, it looked like the students were all crowded around staring at something, perhaps a piece of road kill or something. But as I approached the top of the stairs, it was obvious that they were all joined by the hands, heads bowed, and praying.
It was really scary for me to walk pass and see that because it felt like a cult worshiping the flag pole. I guess I can't say that they shouldn't be doing that because they're entitled to express themselves, but the sight of so many people praying at school really, really bothered me. Part of the reason is because the group was bigger than I've ever seen, making it seem more mob-like and creepy. The other reason is that I wonder what they're all praying for and how long they prayed. I can't help but imagine them all in a trance, dancing around the flag pole the way you'd imagine indigenous peoples of some island to do.
I have to say though, I'm very impressed that so many people are dedicated enough to wake up so early to be at school before 7:15 to take part in a prayer.
