The Journey

Lately, I've been thinking about how I prioritize my life. Throughout high school, the focus was to go through hell in order to reach the destination: Berkeley. Since I reached that "pit stop" (the importance of this destination was downgraded to a pit stop now that it is something I achieved in the past), I found myself another destination, once again an academic goal in the form of the Haas School of Business.

Just reflecting on the coffee, tears, and sweat spilled to reach Berkeley, I know that even if I get into Haas, I'll eventually feel indifferent about it, and then find myself another destination to aim for.

While it is important to set goals in order to constantly strive to better myself, I know I always sacrifice the wonderful experiences that I could make during the journey. Instead of dancing my way to the destination, I'm rushing and letting everything around me fly over my head. I need to be absorbing all the experiences and appreciating them regardless of how insignificant they may seem in the future.

Perhaps this is all a matter of perspective. Maybe I can continue the same way I have been-- stressing, studying, and sacrificing -- to try to reach the next milestone in my life. I just need to change the way I look at every step I take to get there. I can make myself believe that this suffering is actually not what I think it is.

But honestly that's all a lie. I can force myself to believe in all that bullshit RIGHT NOW, but five minutes later, I'll forget it. That's why motivational speeches don't work. Therapy doesnt' work. Because outside of that speech or talk, you just revert back to your normal self. ugh.

Remember to make time for the simple things in life.
